Human vs AI: Is ChatGPT the Beginning of AI Dominance?

by Advit Mittal 22nd Jan. 2023

Since the launch of ChatGPT as its gaining popularity day by day, everyone looking forward to the capability this AI-developed bot possess is feared as well as perplexed about how it can replace humans in the near coming future. Experts are predicting that AI is the future of tomorrow, which was quite expected, but isn’t it too early for it as they argue? The recession has already hit a large section of society as several professionals in the tech field have already lost their jobs, proceeding with the launch of ChatGPT in the market which is going to add to the problem. Now, before discussing and debating more about it, let’s first know what ChatGPT exactly is.

What is Chat GPT?

ChatGPT is a language model developed by OpenAI which is a San Francisco-based company and it was launched on 30th November 2022. Sam Altman is the co-founder as well as CEO of OpenAI. The tool is based on GPT (Generative Pre-Training Transformer) architecture and trained upon the massive amount of text data fed from the internet. The model is capable of understanding human language and generating human-like text, making it useful for a large variety of natural languages processing tasks such as language translation, text summarization, and question answering. It just took 5 days for ChatGPT to reach 1 million users, while Netflix took 3.5 years, Facebook took 10 months and Instagram took 2.5 months for reaching the same amount of users/audience. One of the founders of ChatGPT Is the world's richest person, Elon Musk himself. This new AI is capable of killing businesses if they soon don’t change or adapt accordingly. Talking about some of the top-notch tasks that ChatGPT is capable of performing involve:

1. Writing blogs/articles, Talking and Completing Homework

ChatGPT can be used to write blogs, content, articles, and talk about like humans that that too with literally anything or specifically everything. ChatGPT can help one with copying, pasting, editing, and summarizing articles/blogs for newspapers/magazines. Apart from that, it is capable enough to help students complete their homework as well as solve complex mathematics or physics problems for them. It can also help one with creating bedtime stories for their kids, writing a user-specific rap based on slight information about the user, and many more.

2. Coding

Even the toughest of coding questions can be solved with the help of ChatGPT with slight interference by humans, which is going to reduce the number of software engineers that companies will be hiring in the near coming future. ChatGPT can write scripts for code for the users. It can answer more specific as well as qualitative questions such as “What is the best way to loop in a program?” etc. It can develop an app for you based on your requirements in the best and most efficient way. It can help you with solving coding questions based on competitive coding websites as well. Surely, this could be one of the support systems which can even help you crack your upcoming coding interview, but there is a cache, it will only help if coding jobs sustain in future, whose future is quite in black with the introduction of ChatGPT ;(

3. Planning/Schedule Creation

ChatGPT can help one with planning and scheduling. It can create a schedule for us way ahead of time by keeping all pros as well as cons in consideration and suggesting the best way possible for the same. One can use it to make a diet/workout plan, plan trip expenses as well as question and get information about expected ones, help prepare for an interview, generate next week's grocery list, and many more.

Google vs ChatGPT: The difference between both

Google is used to filter the various web pages or links based on keywords, tags and searches. For example, if you searched “Who is Shahrukh Khan?”, Google based upon various websites/pages/sources of information available will provide you with the relevant sources from where you can click and read about Shahrukh Khan. On the other hand, ChatGPT will generate exact text describing Shahrukh Khan. So basically, ChatGPT is an ultra-smart robot that directly solves your queries without any manual human intervention. It saves time for you to scroll through several websites for searching about specific and relevant information. Broadly speaking, ChatGPT is one of the smartest kids in the school who knows about everything and is capable of answering them. It has everything on its tip.

Pros of ChatGPT

1. Past Memory

ChatGPT remembers everything about what the user said earlier in the conversation. Unlike other chatbots in the market, ChatGPT remembers all our previous conversations based upon which responses are accurately filtered so racism or inappropriate prompts are immediately identified and dismissed accordingly and the best possible response is generated.

2. Allows users to provide follow-up corrections

The major problem associated with other chatbots in the market is related to asking and solving follow-up queries. They don't take into consideration past outputs as input and thus whenever we have to add anything to the question i.e., ask follow-up questions, we have to ask the question completely again. ChatGPT is the solution for the same. Based on our output from the previous response we can put follow-up questions for ChatGPT.

3. Trained to decline inappropriate requests

ChatGPT has been trained to automatically decline as well as doesn't produce any response to inappropriate requests generated by robots or by humans who generate requests on sensitive topics. Tech giants such as Microsoft, have already experimented with their very own chatbots, but they haven’t had much luck and failed massively. In just less than 24 hours after its release, Microsoft’s Tay Bot was declared misogynistic and racist which ultimately led to its extinction. Tay was a bot that was launched by Microsoft in 2016. This incident raises similar questions on ChatGPT about its future and ability to tackle this problem. Although the company claims about deep work being done on this, still, it’s quite questionable about the reliability of responses generated by it being unbiased as well as neutral. As far as ChatGPT claims, they have tackled this problem to a large extent, but the slight possibility still withholds of producing biased outputs.

4. Saves Time

Definitely, because of its capability and ability to produce direct responses, it saves time for the users, who earlier had to scroll through several webpages presented to them as a search result for searching for a piece of information. Instead of scrolling through the webpages, now ChatGPT gives exact and complete information in hand to the users without putting much effort.

Cons of ChatGPT

1. Reliability

It doesn’t generate completely accurate as well as reliable responses always. It is believed to give awkward answers at times, but it is designed as well and is capable enough of improving over time. As well already know, when it comes to AI, the sky is the only limit that’s why one can expect that in future the quality of responses generated is not going to improve. But taking into consideration the present scenario, one of its major disadvantages lies in its ability to occasionally generate incorrect information. Being completely based upon text feed from the internet, its reliability stands quite questionable, but on the other hand, looking at its performance and ability to generate near-closer responses shows how it can overtake humans in the near coming future.

2. May occasionally produce harmful instructions or biased content

Just like the Tay bot by Microsoft, ChatGPT can at certain times can produce biased as well as racist responses. One such incident involves, where users have claimed about how it has generated responses many times where white men have been depicted as superior to black ones.

3. Limited knowledge of the world and events after 2021

It has limited knowledge about incidents as well as events conducted after the year 2021, which limits its ability to produce the latest as well as updated results.

4. Can’t be completely reliable for coding big software

Upon testing, the coding output generated by ChatGPT has been shown to contain several big bugs. Even upon informing/feeding the error displayed to ChatGPT, and asking it about rewriting the code, it was unable to solve and provide a solution to the bugs in the code. This depicts its limitations towards problem-solving abilities towards complex problems. It is incapable of rewriting codes again based upon new values/cases/conditions and several times, produces the same pieces of code.

5. Security

Machines can be hacked and used in a way to harm the organization thus definitely leaving the entire command of the technical team on ChatGPT is not a feasible step. Thus, security will remain to be a big issue with the use of AI tools such as ChatGPT.

Some other AI Tools in the Market:

1. Dalle 2 - It is used to generate artwork based on the text input given by the user.
2. Looka - It is used to generate AI-based logos.
3. Synthesia - It is used to generate talking avatars.
4. Stable Diffusion - It is used to generate text-based images. Based on the input by the user or description, an image is generated by AI. From that image, even a video can be formed which is editable as well.

Talking about the future, this tool can be incorporated by employees to write codes, but can't be used independently completely. This will at some point will always require some sort of human intervention. Some things can only be understood by humans, such as some user- specific demands and requirements, as well as minute details about the development. ChatGPT now or even in the near coming future sure wouldn’t be that capable to head to every minute detail about it. Apart from that code generated by ChatGPT is quite complex to understand by normal humans, as compared to code written by human programmers. Thus, code readability is very which makes it unfit to become a part of an organization where several people will be working on a single project. It would become complex for future employees to understand past codes. This tool can only be used on small scale or for personal use, but it doesn’t have that much capability to be able to be used at an industry level for sure and contribute to developing complex and big software!

Some major and recent news related to ChatGPT

1. Competition: Jasper is a company which has recently rolled out its similar chat interface for business case uses. Jasper Chat is also a similar based conversational chatbot that interacts with humans to compose and edit text. While ChatGPT is capable to write long pieces of code, Jasper Chat has been designed with the main motive to specifically aid/help in business, marketing or finance use. It can be used to write blog posts, produce marketing materials, create ad variations for campaigns and many more things. In October, the company announced a series A funding round of $125 million at a valuation of about $1.5 billion.

2. Microsoft has thrown a massive $1 billion investment into OpenAI and now the company forward to implement ChatGPT into its search engine Bing and other services as well. Microsoft has been battling for quite a long to take Google on as a search engine for years now and has been looking for any feature that can help it stand out. But now, as the experts predict, they have found the perfect fit which can surely reshape the future of Microsoft in the search engine business.

3. While several companies are looking to integrate ChatGPT into their services, in some areas it is quickly being banned. In New York, the city's education department has ordered that the tool will be forbidden and banned across all devices and networks in the New York public schools which is a major setback for the future of ChatGPT.
